Introduction
Are you experiencing persistent dental pain or discomfort and wondering if
tooth removal might be the
solution? At The Smile Spa, we understand that tooth extraction
may seem daunting, but it can be a vital step in addressing severe dental issues and
ensuring long-term oral health. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of tooth
removal, the common scenarios when it’s necessary, and the different methods used to ensure
a comfortable and effective procedure.
Why is Tooth Removal Necessary?
Tooth removal isn’t just about addressing immediate pain—it plays a crucial role in
preventing further complications. Here’s how it helps:
1. Prevents Infection Spread
Teeth affected by severe decay or gum disease can become breeding grounds for bacteria.
Removing these teeth stops the spread of infection to surrounding tissues and teeth.
2. Relieves Pain
Persistent toothache caused by advanced decay or injury can be relieved through extraction,
offering immediate and lasting comfort.
3. Makes Room for Orthodontics
Crowded teeth may require removal to make space for orthodontic treatments like braces or
aligners, ensuring proper alignment.
4. Addresses Impacted Teeth
Wisdom teeth often grow at odd angles or fail to emerge fully, causing discomfort and risk of
infection. Removing impacted teeth resolves these issues.
5. Prepares for Prosthetics
Severely damaged teeth may need to be removed to accommodate dentures or dental implants,
restoring functionality and aesthetics.
Methods of Tooth Removal
Tooth extraction is tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Here are the primary methods
used:
1. Simple Extraction
When It’s Used:
- For teeth affected by advanced decay.
- In cases of loosened teeth due to gum disease.
How It Works:
- The dentist administers local anaesthesia to numb the area.
- Specialized tools are used to loosen the tooth and remove it from the socket.
2. Surgical Extraction
This method is more complex and involves removing teeth that are not easily accessible, such
as impacted wisdom teeth or teeth broken below the gumline.
When It’s Used:
- For impacted or partially erupted teeth.
- In cases of severe tooth damage extending below the gums.
How It Works:
- General or local anaesthesia is administered.
- The dentist may make an incision in the gum to access the tooth and remove it, often
in fragments to minimize trauma.
3. Partial Extraction
A relatively modern approach, partial extraction removes only the damaged portion of the
tooth while leaving the root intact.
When It’s Used:
How It Works:
- The crown and decayed sections are carefully removed.
- This method preserves bone density and facilitates implant placement.

Aftercare Tips for a Smooth Recovery by Dr. Chaitali
1. Keep the cotton in the position for an hour. DO NOT talk too much and swallow the saliva.
Strictly no spitting. Ensure that the position of the cotton is unchanged.
2. Wash your hands and gently remove the cotton after an hour. By this time the bleeding
would have stopped. Don't be alarmed if there are a few spots of blood. Have ice-cream (only
plain flavours). In case you are diabetic, please have sugar free ice-cream. You can
alternately take a cold milkshake or even cold water.
3. You can have regular home food after this. Only cold or room temperature food is allowed.
Do not have anything Hot . Hot foods can trigger swelling. Please avoid hot, hard and spicy
foods.
4. Take the medication as prescribed to you. Do not miss any doses, even if there is no
pain.
5. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post Extraction/Surgery. Therefore no gym,
swimming, running, walking etc for the specified period.
6. In case of third molar (Wisdom Tooth) extractions, it is normal for the mouth opening to
be reduced temporarily. Do not try to forcefully open the mouth. It will come down on its
own.
7. The anaesthesia usually takes 4-5 hours to come down completely.
8. Be gentle while brushing the area around the extracted tooth.
9. Preferably sleep on the opposite side.
10. In case of any doubt, please feel free to call the doctor on Mobile No +91 7506499776 or Landline No.

FAQs
1. Is tooth removal painful?
Tooth removal is generally not painful as dentists use local or general anaesthesia to numb
the area. You may feel slight pressure but no sharp pain during the procedure.
Post-procedure discomfort is manageable with prescribed medication and proper care.
2. How long does it take to recover after a tooth removal?
Most patients recover within 7-10 days. Healing can vary based on factors like the complexity
of the extraction and adherence to aftercare instructions.
3. What can I eat after tooth removal?
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Avoid hard, crunchy,
or spicy foods for the first few days to prevent irritation or infection.
4. Can I smoke or drink alcohol after tooth removal?
Smoking and alcohol should be avoided for at least 72 hours post-extraction as they can
interfere with healing and increase the risk of dry socket.
